I wouldn't use that. Spend the $5-$10 on an actual sponge filter, which you connect to an air pump. Each week, gently wring the filter sponge in a cup of aquarium water to release any detritus without killing the bacteria. Household sponges usually have properties (chemical or otherwise) which are designed to PREVENT bacterial growth, which happens to be the precise opposite of what you need. Not to mention that household sponges do not age well.
