I've even found with anything less than the Eclipse 12, the current is low enough that jamming a bit of sponge filter into the filter output (so that it sticks out a bit into the tank, and out a bit into the filter, in the area where water from the biowheel falls) will slow it down enough. Just don't jam it in too tightly or it will make the water flow back up and possibly flood out of the filter basket.
I just use sponge filter media from the pet stores - it's got really large holes in it and is super easy to cut.
