Hey guys! Been a while since I was last on, anyhow I was just curious how I go about doing a water change. Obviously I don't do the whole tank so do I just make the tap water the same temp as the tank, take some water out and put that water in?
I use gravel vacs with my bettas and have never had a problem, although if you're worried you can take the betta out and put him in a cup while you clean. Just make sure he can't jump out of the cup. You could poke some holes in a piece of cardboard or paper to cover it with, just to be safe.
That wide end of the siphon which you use on the gravel is designed to PREVENT the possibility of sucking him up into it. Without that, the suction could very well take him in and tear those beautiful fins to shreds. Have no fear!
I got a small gravel vac at the local pet store, just a basic thing and it does fairly well. The tip of it was a little long, so I cut it down some and now it's perfect for cleaning the gravel in my five gallon. :)
