Betta changing color? Aging?

I got this Betta on Monday from a friend's friend. I have no idea how old this betta is, but when I got home today I noticed he is getting these gorgeous blue lines along his fins. Here is a picture:



Has it been there the whole time and I just never noticed it because he doesn't flare up very often? I hope this is supposed to be happening and he is not like...diseased. I'm already about to change the water. By the way, what do you guys think of Splendid Betta Water Conditioner? I just picked some up from Petco.

One more thing. When I take him out to change the water, can I put him into a piece of tupperware that has been through the dishwasher before?

Just rinse it out first. Most dishwasher detergent won't leave noticeable residue, but it's good to be safe.

Those blue lines are DEFINITELY supposed to be there. He's BEAUTIFUL!

Depending on his previous environment, or any stressful situations he may have been put through during transfer, he may just be warming up to his new home. Most bettas go through this. They 'liven up' and it's definitely not something to worry about. No disease or anything. As Mister Sparkle said, he truly is beautiful - the blue really adds a lot to the red.

My betta has this as well. A while after he was put into the new divided 5 gallon, these began to show up... it's beautiful, isn't it ??

Also it's easier to leave your betta in the tank, depending on the size.

Also. For a 2.5 gallon tank, with tapwater treated with Splendid Betta Complete Water Conditioner, do I need a filter?

I am frantically trying to do a water change for the first time. I don't think I am doing it right at all. Essentially I just dumped out all of the water into the sink and filled it back up again and put the water conditioner in. Bad? It looks more murky and gross than before! I am letting the filter I already have run for at least a little bit to see if the water will clear up.
