Question Aquarium decor

Hi-I'm a new betta parent to Humphrey and Della. They live in 2 & 1.5 gallon homes. In the near future I would like to purchase a 10 gallon tank and I'm looking for things to put in the tank. Someone mentioned coffee cups are OK because they have they a glossy coating. Della's home has the cup shaped like a pink Cadillac and she loves it. For the 10 gallon I have a planter that does not have a glossy coating. I've never put a plant in it (top heavy) so I can just wash it out. My question is-can I paint some kind of coating on it so that nothing will leach out of the planter into the water. The planter (Mimi) has pink/flesh colored paint on her. Thank you
