How do you do your water change? If you take the fish out, empty the tank, re-fill it and put him back in, then no and you probably don't want gravel. but if you're taking out 25% or something like that at a time then gravel should be kept in.
There's benefits to gravel, yes. The esthetics is the obvious one, secondly good bacteria live in it. Not enough in a small betta tank for an unfiltered tank to survive without any manual work, but there is some which should help the water parameters from spiking too fast with ammonia and stuff.
