How often should I be adding aquarium salt?

Should I be adding aquarium salt with every water change to replace the salt that was removed? Should there always be aquarium salt in the tank? Can too much aquarium salt harm a Betta? Is it necessary for there always to be salt in a Betta tank?

Constant immersion in salty water can lead to health problems for bettas. While a very dilute amount of salt will probably not lead to any of these difficulties, I save the salt for the hospital tank.

It is not necessary for there to always be salt in your betta's tank. Most people only add it when there is a problem present such as a torn fin or an illness. Oldfishlady also advises against constant or continual salt addition because of kidney problems it can cause in your betta, I believe.

If you are adding it, though, you should only add it with water changes, and not when replacing evaporated water. Because even though your water is evaporating, the salt is not, therefore leaving you with the original concentration. Or something. Terrible explanation, I know.

Kittles, you make an excellent point! I never actually realized that salt doesn't evaporate with my tank water :O

Oh, I have a question.

So I added salt to both my 2.5 and my 5 gallons when I did water changes to help keep my fishes stress down. I added the amount recommended on the container for the gallons of tank I had.

My question... If after that (before a new water change) say my fish gets torn fins... should I add more salt or just do a complete water change so I can add salt?

Don't add more salt, it won't be better overall.

Do a water change, and replace the salt. The sale that is in there should already be taking care of it.
