Well they make good toys.

Betta bulbs from walmart make good toys.
Spoof and Haruki were prodding them floating around, and playing with them... it was cute,
I bet they were thinking, "Gah, mama REALLY loves us, she bought us turds to play with, *prod prod*"

The best way to get the bulbs to grow is to bury them in the gravel. If they are left floating, they usually mold. I also add a little aquarium fertilizer to help.
