Plastic mesh and filtration?

Ok since I turfed the plastic plant near the filter, Nemoy was being not that bright and getting too close to the intake. I made a filter cage around the intake and outflow, nemoy seems to like the fact the current has been reduced and is happily swiming in areas he hasn't gone before.
I have a question for those who use plastic mesh for tank deviders, will I have to do water changes more often with the mesh between the betta and the filter?

I think that's up to you. Do you have some sort of testing kit? I don't remember what my numbers were (I lost my kit) but I did fish-in cycling anyways. I think it should be fine. Ammonia and nitrates won't be blocked by a mere plastic mesh. However, there will be noticeably less flow on the other side.
