There are some pretty good plants out there that don't require a whole lot of light, and are generally easy to take care of. Java ferns and java moss are very popular...I've always been happy with elodea/anacharis (duckweed)...anubias and water sprite are also pretty easy and attractive.

I have an anubias nana. They are really hardy and a great beginner plant. I have several and they look great at the front of a tank.

Why don't you wander into the Aquarium Plant section of tropicalfishkeeping.com ? They're very friendly, ha.

Watersprite is also a great addition. Look it up, its a beginner plant and will provide roots for your betta to build a bubblenest in!
