What Type of Sponge?

I am wanting to put a sponge over the intake tube of my filter and I do not know what type I am looking for. I looked at a box of small filter sponges made by Aqueon. They are big enough to cut a slice in but they seem a bit rough to me. They are white, not black. Could someone suggest something? Thanks!!
