Is 5 neon tetras, 2 corys and a betta too much for a 10g tank?

That might be a bit much I'd go for 3 neon's 1cory and a Betta.

No that sounds pretty ok IMO. But cories are shoaling fish and should be in groups of at least three with four or five being preferable. You also need to make sure your tank is cycled before adding corys because they are scaleless and can get burns from bad water quality very easily.

Try running your stock through AqAdvisor.. it will give you a general sense of your stocking level. According to your specs your stocking level is about 83%... you always want to try to stay under 100% stocked IMO.


One more thing, tetras are known to be fin nippers so I would make sure you have alternate housing for the betta in case they decide to ruin his fins. Honestly I wouldn't put tetras in with a betta but I've heard that people do without issue so I guess is a case by case sort of thing.

Actually many betta keepers don't keep bettas with tetras because tetras have a reputation for nipping the long fins of bettas. Bettas in turn are known for bullying tetras. Like I said some people have successfully kept the two together without issue but I would never chance it.

While most instances of betta/neon communities work out great, there is always a need to have alternative arrangements available for the possibility that it just doesn't work sometimes.

Neons and betta got along fine with me =) Anyway, 5 tetras, 3 corys and 1 betta should be OK in a 10 gall depending on the space you have, by this I mean if its a bowl shape I wouldnt put all them in together, if its say... rectangular then this would be better as it has more swimming space.
