Why is Aden scratching?

OK. So Aden is in a very bad way, he has gone from his vibrant red and purple to a pinky white colour his face his pale and his fins are practically nothing. I know he has fin rot and I bought Tetra general tonic today as my last hope but I have just noticed him scratching against the sand and his pot there are bits of fins at the bottom of his tank too. Why is he scratching? he doesnt have any white spots so I don't think its a parasite of some sort, its so heartbreaking to watch the poor guy suffering like this and its down to the LFS that sold him to me =(

So, I have just come up to bed and Aden is dead =( I feel like seriously crying, especially at the sight of his skinny, frail body =(

Thanks guys =) I have just spent the last hour and a half cleaning and sterilising everything in his tank with boiling water. I couldn't bear to flush him last night so I left him in his tank, in hope that I would wake and he'd be swimming again, but he has dead as a doorpost =( I tested the water before I got rid and everything was 0 except for Ammonia which was 0.50ppm, when I tested it wednesday everything was 0, including Ammonia levels. I'm thinking I might to add some Tetra General Tonic to the setup tank just so it kills any bacteria that I may have missed.
