Check valve/sponge filter help

Those with check valves for your airline tubing, do you find the regular type work alright, or do you think the spring check valves work better? I have no clue which one to get.

Also, does anyone have a picture of their sponge filter setup with tubing and gang valve? I need to see the scale reference and uh....I don't know how to set this up. I'm guessing the gang valve goes on the OUTSIDE of the tank?

Wow, so not one person uses check valves or sponge filters on this forum? That's strange, as everyone seemed to indicate sponge filters were good with bettas. I guess I'll have to ask my (untrustable) pet store.
