Exclamation Tail Rips... Oh noes! :(

My boy's tail is ripping like crazy! He does not really flare *unless uber stressed* and there are three rips in his tail now! I do frequent water changes and have put aquarium salt into his 5g tank... I think it may be the gravel... but I am not sure. Does anyone else have this big of a problem?

Are there any fake plants or decorations in his tank that could have ripped his fins? Usually the hard plastic plants are the cause of ripped fins.

What about the filter intake, sometimes they can get their fins caught in them and the suction alone can cause the delicate fins to tear.

Do a test on the plastic plant with nylon hose instead of the toilet paper, run the hose along the plastic plant and if it snags it will also snag the Bettas delicate fins or just remove it all together to be on the safe side

How much salt are you using and for how long? also how much and how often are your water changes.
What kind of substrate are you using, some are sharper than other and that could be the cause or part of the cause.....

it is a low power filter... so I don't think that the intake is much of a problem. I put a rounded tablespoon of salt in my aquarium after to do about a 75% water change (about once a month) and my water is changed (25 - 50%) once a week. I use aquasafe water conditioner with bioextract and nitraban.

Nah, it doesn't bother me in the least. I have no problems with tail rips because their life isn't in danger (as long as it's controlled). But I do my water changes and occasional aquarium salt, so I'm cool with it.
