I recently started keeping Bettas and found this forum in so many searches for information that I thought I should join, so...
Hello Everybody!
I have a few Bettas so far... all from local stores both privately owned and franchise pet stores.
I have two males, one is a Petco King (package lists epithet as
Betta splendens), which is displayed in my avatar.
The other male is mostly red with some black on the scales and some metallic blue, that one is a crown tail.
I have 1 plakat looking female from a privately owned pet store that carries plakats
1 possible VT female that looks white/pink until bright light makes her shine a light metallic blue, she has two red dash marks on her tail...
I have 3 round tail females with almost identical colors to my King bettam making me wonder if they are siblings, these came from the same Petco, I managed to obtain them only two days after they arrived at the store and several females were apparently quite young.
I have a orange female that is nearly solid in color with some black pigments peppering her scales, her tail form is a mystery so far but is suspected to be a half moon, given the inventory of the store (privately owned) being crown and half moon tails only.
I also have one dark irridecent-metallic blue CT female from the same store as my orange.
so 6 females and 2 males (all picked for visible alleles or behaviors)
Most of the females are in a 30 community tank, one of the males is in there too
currently the king male and the plakat female are in a 10 gallon tank, conditioning
I am planning on some hobby scale breeding, all of my fish were selected for visible traits or behaviors, corresponding to alleles for color, shape, size and body type among other things. I hope to keep myself busy enjoying this hobby and the lovely fish.
I do expect that some fish will not spawn or be too old, but I am patient and have no agenda or deadline to meet so can proceed at a casual pace.
To help feed the fish I have obtained a flightless fruit fly culture, now I can turn fruit scraps into fish food.
I also am raising applesnails/mystery snails which produce infusoria and are fun to watch.
I hope to learn a lot here!
