Blood worms

Any tips on storing and feeding frozen blood worms? I give Dexter a couple worms every four days or so, but I find I waste a lot because it's hard to break off small chunks. When I thaw the chunk, I get about 10 blood worms, so I end up wasting a lot. Not to mention the open package in the freezer seems to get freezer burn. How long can I leave the thawed worms in the refrigerator - seems like after a day or two they are brown and gross so I just dump them down the drain? How to people break up the frozen block? I've resorted to a hammer a few times. :)
