me and vulcan

hi there iv just set up my first betta only tank and need a place to talk about it and my lovely crowntail male named Vulcan. iv had him for a couple of months and in a community but decided to move him out and get him some ladies, so i have 3 ladies on the way. he has a nicely planted tank with lots of caves and hidey holes and 2 khuli loaches on clean up duty. i hope to add pictures to my profile of my betta setup as soon as the ladies arrive

are the girls going in with him? thats actually very dangerous for the females and the male. each should have their own seperate tank or else fights will break loose which (unless stopped) can cause severe injury and even death. Or even spawning and im sure you dont want baby fish crowding up the place xD

jup they are, providing there is enough space all should be peaceful. i have been getting advice from an experienced breeder, having a group of three ladies will make it impossible for him to pair up and the ladies will establish a pecking order among themselves. i'll mix his tank up abit and move things around so he wont get protective of his territory, aswell there are lots of caves for hidey holes. if it does become a problem i can place them in my community instead.

jup iv done extensive research. Vulcan is my first betta and it would be unfair if something happened. everything should be fine, im getting some cherries tomorrow aswel that im really excited about lol

How big is the tank?
Even with 3 females and 1 male the male could end up dead or badly injured, females dead from each other or from the male.
The stress alone can be caused to all the fish that can inhibit the immune response due to poor stocking choice..... even with lots of hiding places unless they are in at least 55g or larger with 50-75% plants both rooted and floating to kill the line of site.

It is good that you have a back up plan in place

Also, even with 3 females..... they will spawn- when the female is ready she will go to him- the females eggs will ripen due to the hormones emitted by the male- the male will be drawn to the females as she becomes ready from the hormones emitted by her.....after the females eggs ripen over and over and she either spawns, absorbs or drops the eggs, it will shorten her life span...thats just part of the cycle.........
