Unhappy What was it?

my fish just died today , and it was shocking because it was so sudden. he water perms were all fine but when i went to change his water today he was darting everywhere then he would stop and sink to the bottom before starting again soon after he passed. i looked at his body , and though hes red it looked like he had like a fine gold powder on his midsection , and the only thing i though of was velvet , but could it kill this fast i mean i fed him last night and he was his normal self . though looking back , he never really ate correctly - never eating pellets , i got freeze dried bloodworm and shrimp which he would eat but only in small amounts - any ideas..?

water ph 7.4 ammonia .25ppm nitrite 0 nitrate 0 - or very low - temp 80F
water change 50% 2x a week in a 5g tank

Sorry this so late a reply, but yes, it sounds like velvet, and it can kill extremely fast. By the time the parasites are visible to the naked eye, he's been infected for a while already.

I'd really bleach everything well if you're going to use the same equipment for another fish.

Sorry about your fish... :(
