As long as the male is happy, and is ready to breed, (a bubblenest indicates that) he will build a bubblenest anywhere.
2.5 gallons and higher are recommended, if you didn't know

IME-a male will build a bubblenest in the small cup that is used as temporary housing that most are brought home in.....

Some male will not build nest until they have eggs in their mouth when spawning, I have a breeder that is like this and another that build a nest half the size of the 10g tank but eats the eggs...go figure...lol....

IME-each male is different when it comes to nest building.......

Don't introduce a female into his tank- he'll tear her to shreds! Unless you are planning on breeding... then do TONNES and TONNES of research. Males and females can't live together, and breeding sometimes takes a long time to get right!

No, don't try. I've only seen one case where a female could live with a male peacefully. It is definitely not worth the risk.

Male/ Female tanks rarely work and ONLY in LARGE (55+ gallon) heavily planted tanks. IMO only really experienced breeders should ever even try it.
