Shopping for first betta tomorrow!

Hi all,

I hope all of you can help me decide on what betta to buy!

I believe my tank will be completely cycled by tomorrow, which means I get to go to Petco and choose a betta!

My 10 gallon is modestly planted with two java ferns, one anubias gigantea, and soon will be home to one anacharis and a microsword. Ah, and a few marimo balls. I think any waste from the fish will be quickly absorbed by the plants in the tank.

I am hoping to get any of the fish that isn't wildtype/veiltail, because...well, the more elaborate finnage makes me happy. No offense to veiltails - they are beautiful as well.

The Petco near my house apparently has 50 bettas to offer, so I think there will be a lot of tail types and colors to choose from. I have mentally narrowed down my choices to fish that aren't solid-colored. Although, if anyone suggests an awesome color and I see it at the store, I would be very happy to take him home.

So here's where I would appreciate some input. I already named my fish Mr. Darcy (so I can call him mine, of course), the male protagonist of Pride and Prejudice. If you know his character, let me know what colors you think of when you envision him. If you can think of several colors, even better.

This is all very exciting for me - I've been waiting to buy a fish for months!

It's been so long since I read the book I don't remember the character.

I have a red/blue crown tail & part of the blue is iridescent.

I was thinking about a lighter color - as it would show up better in my tank - but I saw this guy & fell in love.

So even if you go in with a good idea of what you want - you may be surprised!

Many people just wait to see who "grabs" them!!

Prideful and undeniably smexy are just two adjectives. Mainly, I just want to know what awesome color combos are out there so I can match those colors with the way I see Mr. Darcy. I'll make sure to check for which fish grabs me! That first connection is key in our relationship! :P

well, sounds like you want a crowntail firstly. As for colours, what colour is the substrate? Any background to the tank? Red and Blue are very typical, so for me the ones that are different from that get my attention.

i think of black & blue for Mr. Darcy (kind of like my guy in avatar )

i go with a plakat or a half moon myself

The first time I bought my very own betta I went in having this idea of what colors I wanted. In the end I got a coloration that I hadn't planned on but choose a fish that interacted with me when I was looking at him. Now when I go to get a betta I look for ones that interact with me (some of the bettas will just sit in their little cups and do nothing even if you pick them up)

Thanks for the suggestions. I am going to leave for the store in a few. I may be like you, jeanclaudeasher, and just bring home a fish that interacts with me. I want a fish that doesn't necessarily flare at me, but looks at me with interest...a fish that perks up when he sees me!

The substrate is black. I added two terra cotta flower pots, and there's a bit of greenery in the tank as well.
