I bought a tetra whisper filter, can I use this with a Betta?

I'm not familiar with it, what are your concerns about it? The flow? The intake?

The flow mainly, you can lower it but I have it going as slow as possible and it creates quite the current.

I'm having the same problem but my flow isn't adjustable. I've got the aquatech 5-15 gallon filter and am quite worried about my betta with the large current it's creating

I had a Whisper in my 2.5 gal for a while. It worked ok, the suction cups come un-sucked, though, and it didn't do so great of a job. I just bought a TOM internal mini filter, (I think about the same $$ at Petsmart,) and it works much better! Much quieter, adjustable water flow, cartriges cost the same as the Whisper, and it keeps the water MUCH clearer. Much better buy if you ask a former Tetra Whisper owner, though if you keep the Whisper filter, it does a decent job and doesn't have too strong a current for a betta.

Mines adjustable but even at the lowest setting there's quite the current.

Mines a Tetra Whister Power Filter 10(made for 5-10gal). It's external so no suction cups.

What size tank. The best way to buffer an HOB filter is to take a piece of sponge and rubber band it to the out flow.

You can also take a ziplock bag and put some pennies in it then tape the top of the bag to the top of the filter. But I've never tried that method out so I don't know how well it works.

A filter would be unnecessary have your tank is not big,.

You can also take a plastic water bottle, and cut a small section of the round part off, and rinse it thoroughly, then duct tape it to the top of your filter and let the curved part hang down in front of the flow. It will catch it and make the water come out each side much slower. Its what I did with my Aquatech 5-15. Make sure the body of the bottle you use does not have the label on it, or any of the gluey part from the label on it. Works great for me.
