Setting up my first 5 gallon

Actually, I'm setting up my first tank, period.
And I have no idea what I'm doing! I've been researching everything betta for the past few days, and I've come up with a shopping list. I already have the tank and gravel. I also have Nutrafin Betta Plus conditioner, but I think it's more for betta bowls, so I'll be getting a different bottle of conditioner as well.

Whisper 10 filter
Adjustable 25 watt heater
Hood
Silk plants
Smooth cave
Smooth rock, for resting
Water testing kit
Siphon
Brine shrimp
Blood worms

I've decided to go with an Atlantis theme, so I'll be getting a couple of cute Roman-esque decorations as well, as long as they're nice and smooth and won't snag him.

So, am I missing anything?

Also, does he need a light?

I'm going to get an apple snail for the tank in a week or so once it's stable. Would I need anything else for the snail?

API Master Test kit for testing his water. You'll need one to keep an eye on his water stats and track your cycle. Don't get strips. They are not reliable. I'd suggest reading up on cycling and understanding water quality. I think that's the most important thing.

I like lights in my tank but I have live plants so it's needed. It's really your choice. Some betta get freaked out by bright lights. Tango did when I first put him in his tank.

I agree with vaygirl. Master test kit if you plan on doing a fish-in cycle.

Some things you might want to get:
Betta pellets. Blood worms and Brine shrimp from what I hear are mainly treats.
Aquarium salt. Aquarium salt prevents diseases. just put the reccomended amount on the box into your tank right from the beginning and every time you change the water and you shouldn't run into any health problems.
A small notebook. To keep up with cycling if you do a fish-in cycle.
Water Conditioner. To keep from poisoning/killing your fish with chlorine, chloramines, and other bad chemicals that are in your everyday tap and filtered water.
2 5-Gallon Buckets. So that you can fill one up with conditioned water before you start cleaning your tank. The other is for putting the dirty tank water in. Lowes is selling them now. (just got mine a few days ago)

Although if you can take your 5 gallon back; just get a Tetra 5 gallon or 10 gallon Kit from Walmart ($30 or $40). It might be easier because it comes with the tank, hood, light, and filter already. That way you don't have to worry about what to buy/buying so many things.

All you'd need to worry about afterwards are the decorations and the fish

Ok, so I got my huge shopping trip done on Monday. :/ Spent more than I thought I would, but what else is new. I bought:

-Whisper PF 10 filter.
-Elite heater
-Nutrafin water conditioner
-API water testing kit (they didn't have the master freshwater kit, and I didn't realize I got the wrong one. Petco will test my water for me though, and I go once a week, so I'll get a thorough test done once a week and track the ph with my kit)
-Siphon
-Thermometer
-Blood worms
-Brine Shrimp

So this is my tank!

The filter seemed to be creating quite a current (to my inexperienced eye) so I rigged the water bottle shield to direct the flow down into the heater corner.

And introducing.....Federigo! To be more specific, King Federigo Pesce de Tonno.

And my new Inca Gold who is starting my fish-in cycle....

I need a name for him. I'm leaning towards Mango for now. Oro is also a possibility.

Awesome tank!!! ,but you might want to add a extra plant or two. Just to give the betta a little more cover.

I actually do have another plant that wasn't in any of the pictures. I took these after I'd set it up, but then I decided it was too empty. It's a bigger plant with longer leaves. I picked it out because I heard that bettas like sleeping in plants close to the surface. I put it in the corner so he'll have something to hide behind if he wants to.

This is the tank now. You can see Mango in the back. :)

I've been checking the ph in the tank pretty often. Yesterday, before the introduction of Mango, the ph was perfect, 6.8. It is now holding steady around 7.0/7.1.
Would it be cruel to get Federigo in there? I wanted to wait, obviously, but in the meantime he's in his cup with no filter or heater. :/
