"self-starting" gravel vac

The self-starting gravel vac I bought at Petsmart gave me a lot of trouble today. It took a long time trying to get it to start siphoning. I tried holding the open end of the siphon before putting it in the water and then pumping the water. After maybe 20 or so tries, the thing would finally work. Are there any tips/tricks for getting the siphon to start without disturbing the fish so much?

Mine is easy. 2-3 pumps and it flows. Make sure u submerge the entire thing.... all the way up to where the hose connects to the plastic, then move it back and fourth a couple of times. U don't have to move it far, maybe and inch or two back and fourth.

I have the same problem with my tetra siphon. I get fed up waiting so I just end up sucking it through and then get a mouthful of fish water, not nice lol.

Blech :P
Sucking on it seems to be the most foolproof method. I wish mine would start as easily as yours, cmdrJOE.

You don't need to suck up that much water that it ends up in your mouth. I usually stop sucking on the hose when I see the first water flowing into the hose from the vac. After that it runs all by itself. I never get it to work with the pumping motion.

You have to give them a sharp, fast shake. Sort of like snapping your wrist.

Or, you can fill them with water at the sink, keep both ends level with each other, carry them to the tank and quickly stick one end in the tank and the other in your bucket.
