need advice/insight on old betta

I need some advice/insight on what to do with Sparkie. He is OLD (between 5 and 6 years) and lately things have tooken a turn for the worst. All he does is lay on the bottom of the tank with his head and neck curved upright or he is up at the surface "sitting" straight up and down.. His qaulity of life is horrible right now and Im not sure weather it's cruel of me to keep him alive when he can hardly get around. Im very attached to him after having him for over 4 years so it really doesn't seem right to put him to sleep but it also doesn't seem right to keep him alive when he's like this. Any insight helps, thanks.

heres some pics to show what he's like

Sad, Sounds like a Old friend is going down that sad road to fish heaven, you might want to think about put him down cuz he could be going through pain.
My Jackie my first fish live 5 years and we put him in the freezer to let him go. i was 7 years old then.

Awwww, it sounds like he's going to pass soon. :( All you can do is keep him warm and in clean water. I'm sorry, it doesn't seem like there's much you can do. There are ways to humanly euthanize. DQ has the link if you want to do that.

I would try and put him in a smaller container so he can get the surface easier. Even if that just means a cup floating in his tank so he stays warm. Poor boy seems like he's ready to go...

the strange thing is is he has been acting like this for a little over 2 weeks. I don't know why he just won't die. It sounds bad but every morning I wake up hoping he passed away peacefully in the night. This is no way for him to live. I get so sad whenver I look at him.

I've uprooted a peice of bacopa caroliniana and have it floating at the top and he
seems to like sitting on there instead of the bottom. He's got a heater and I clean the water every few days. He's in a 2 way divided 5.5g.

I just don't want to put him to sleep and then regret it.

I agree with DH. Get him into a container where its easier for him to get air. Even if it means he only has 1-2 inches of water, as long as its warm and clean that is the best way to make him comfortable.

well he does have a thick sprig of a plant floating that he sits on at the surface. he just gotta open his mouth and get air, doesn't gotta move at all. but i think I will try the small floating container. For some reason I think once I put him in there he will pass away fairly quickly. My poor boy I never thought I would cry over a fish but everytime I think about him I start.

thanks guys.
