I Have a 75w heater and even if I had it on the lowest setting at 68 degrees, the temp. wouldn't go below 88 degrees. I think in winter the heater will come in handy, cus we keep the house at around 68-69 and the heater will be most effective for keeping the tank around 76-80 than now when the house is kept almost ten degrees higher.

What size tank is your 75W heater in?

Thanks again, Adastra - that makes sense!

a 5g. it might be too powerful but in winter in a cold house it might be perfect. I dunno why but even with the heater unplugged and the light off it only went down another degree. rggh this is frustrating. I can't put my fish in there till it is a safe temp. I might have to wait over night and I am scared my fish will pass away. at least my 3 cory cats who are all in a betta cup temporarily.

Pointing a fan at the tank will help slowly lower the temperature.

well after I lowered the temp of the actual house one degree and let it sit overnight with no heater or light on, it is now maintaining a safe and constant temp. with just the light of the tank on.
