Snails can eat some types of algae but not all and if you have a lot of algae you may not see much gone, but I like snails and think they are a great addition to the tank.

I love my snails, my sister reckons their suicidal because they climb to the top of the tank and throw themselves off lol. Who wouldnt with me as an owner :P

I don't think snails do a very good job of eating the algae, when I had my golden apple in my 12 gallon, I would see the the trail where she had been but no sign of a squeaky clean tank. If you want an algae eater, depending on the tank size you could get an otto or 2 but I would go with the snail cause their awesome :)

I love my snail and I feed him a slice of carrot but.....he cannot be with my female betta b/c she is very aggressive and trys to eat him while my male couldn't care less. Try to get a snail that can match your gravel if you get a gold snail against black gravel it will be more tempting for your fish to try and eat him.

I have no clue why but my female is so aggresive she will peck at him and show no mercy so I simply took him out. It also depends on your bettas character. My male is very laid back and so is my female but my other female likes to swim around like a shark and display her fins.
