You didn't cycle your tank?

I know you are supposed to quarantine, but I only have 1 tank to use as a quarantine/hospital tank and I ended up having to move the "leader" fish into it because I woke up yesterday to find the other three with shredded fins and missing scales. I was not about to leave them in their cups to quarantine when I got them, because they had very bad algae growth in them and no heater. Anyway, I have been keeping a very close eye on them and they are just fine. They are very active, eat like pigs, and don't have any external parasites.

I have never cycled any of my tanks and my fish are always fine. I do use Tetra SafeStart every time I set up a new tank and i add a few drops after every water change as well.

Are you planning of putting the female back in or leaving her out?

I'm not going to put the female back in with the others. I know it's common for some nipping and chasing to go on but this was MUCH worse than nipping. I think she's just one of the females that would do better in her own tank, like the males.

I have one like that. Do you have just three now? In the tank I mean.

Yes, there are only 3 in the tank now. They are getting along just fine. I am going to be getting more, but I read you should not add them all at one time because of toxins building up or something? Anyway, since it is a 20 gallon tank and I read to allow about 2 gallons per betta, I was going to add 9 of them total. Even though I could add 10 I didn't want to overcrowd them.

Oh really? I was told to add them all at one time to avoid fighting over territory the first comers claim.

Adding them at the same time is what I have heard too. And what I did with mine. If you add more later, take out your decorations/plants and rearrange everything to cut down on the fighting.

That is what I done. Added them all at once, but I put the most aggressive one in last. And they are fine. Still fighting with Crimson for dominance, though. Be careful with just having three. Two could gang up on one.
