Mosquito larvae and wingless fruit-flies are all I've ever tried. Raising live food is a bother unless you're breeding. Some folks enjoy it, though. Breeders, of course, find it necessary.

White worms and grindals (may be a little small for an adult betta) are very easy to culture and my bettas enjoy them immensely.

White worms are said to be rather fatty but I don't feed them to excess.

They are easy to culture (just google it) and I never do anything but add more substrate from time to time and feed them their daily meal of cat kibble.
