Question my new boy has a funky gill

I bought a new betta yesterday, and when I got home, I noticed that one of his gills (gill flap?) is sticking out. He doesn't seem to have any trouble breathing, but I'm a bit worried about it because I don't want him to injure anything inside his gill flap. Has anyone ever seen a fish with this problem before? Is it possible to correct it?

I'll try to get a pic of it and post it later.

Here's the pics (sorry, they're a little blurry)...

You can see how far out his gill (the left one) is pretty well on this next pic...

Hmm, I can't really tell much from the picture. If that's his permeant tank I would take out the gravel to give him a little more room. He will also need frequent water changes. Some members might highly recommend a larger tank...
Anyways, he's a beautiful fish and I wish you luck.

It's not his permanent bowl, it's just something I picked up for him until I could get his tank set up. He's got a lovely 3 gallon just waiting for everything to adjust properly. He should be in it in the next few days.

Thanks, all! I saw him and just fell in love!

I'm guessing with his gill problem I'll need to have decorations with no sharp edges AT ALL! I don't even think I'll be able to use silk plants! I'm afraid something will get under his gill and do some damage inside. I've already decided that I'll need to take the decoration that's in there out because it might have sharp edges. I'll just have to get a nice hide for him that doesn't have any weird edges. For now I think I'm going to put a mug in his new tank for him to hide in.

His new tank is a bit tall and I was wondering what I could put near the top for him to rest on if he wants. I've seen on a few pics that some people have a fake plant with a suction cup attached to the side of the tank. Can you buy those like that, or do you have to make them?

I have a few of them and got them at Petsmart. At least at my location they have four different types and are less then a dollar each. There is also something called a betta bed leaf hammock but I haven't used that yet.
