A big surprise from the Kaiser...

As I was feeding Frances' and Isabella's fry yesterday afternoon, I decided to check on Kaiser Wilhelm. He's been acting strangely, sticking to one corner of his decently-large tank, not eating very much, etc., so I've been trying to keep an eye on him.

So I was watching the Kaiser very closely to check for signs of illness, and I almost screamed when I saw two two-week-old (?) fry dart out from behind him! At first I thought I was seeing things, but then I looked around the tank a little more, and I could count more than thirty of them!

This came as a HUGE surprise to me, as his bubblenest was small and unmaintained, and I never saw any eggs in the tank at all. Through thinking back, I know just how it happened.

Before deciding to breed Frances and Isabella for a line of blue and possibly green crowntails, I had originally wanted to breed Wilhelm and Catherine for red and Cambodian crowntails. So I had used a smaller, planted breeding tank, released Catherine when she was ready, but in spite of how the Kaiser chased her, she never seemed interested. After several days, I removed her, worried that Kaiser would get frustrated and nip her more. I decided that perhaps they weren't meant for one another and chose another pair.

I kept feeding the Kaiser as usual, and saw nothing changing. But soon, he was focused on staring at one side of the tank, with what I thought was an empty nest.

And then, yesterday happened. I prepared the vacant half-gallon bowl I had lying around for Wilhelm, and I immediately started feeding the fry egg yolk and BBS (most of them were DEFINITELY large enough to be eating this already). They had survived without any special care for a while, but now I'm going to give them just as much love as my other (planned) spawn!

Such resilient little babies! :)

So I guess I have a double spawn log to keep now, just like 1fish2fish, haha...

Jade - it was probably about 2-3 weeks! The tank is planted so it is possible they were feeding off infusoria... But they are now large enough for BBS which makes my life easier (no more egg-boiling!).
