For anyone that's looking to this page for opinions on setting up their next betta tank, I would like to point out that the vast majority of quality adjustable heaters are designed to be used in tanks that are a minimum of 2 gallons--although they are presumed safe to use as long as you can immerse them up to their waterline. For this reason I feel that two gallons is the minimum tank size for a betta because a heater is simply not optional for their well-being.

However, your betta will be easier to care for in a larger tank and will be happier and healthier in it as long as the tank is maintained properly. Personally, I use ~3 gallon and 5 gallon tanks because they are large enough to hold a cycle, can be safely heated, and provide the betta with plenty of space while still being rather compact in design.

He's in one close to a 2, with about 1.5g worth of water (that's after decor). Moving up to a 5 later. It's already purchased, we're just trying to move things around in the house so he'll be in a permanent, stable spot first. :)
