cycling HELP PLEASE!):

so I've been trying to cycle my 5.5 G Tank. Rightnow my readings are ammonia about 7.0.. Nitries about 5.0 or 6.0... Nitrates about 5.0 or 6.0... I've already tried to lower my ammnia with a 25% & a 50% water change but it always seems to stay level at around 7.0 or 8.0 ppm. HELP PLEAAASE? How can I fix this?

What are you using to cycle the tank with (raw shrimp, fish food, ammonia)?

I cycled mine with pure ammonia. When it got too high (I put WWWWWWAY too much in at first) I did a WC, and then let it sit for a day or two. There should be enough ammonia in there right now to feed the bacteria for a couple of days, but make sure to test it each day. Once it gets back to around 3-5ppm put the shrimp back in and continue.

How long have you been cycling? What kind of filter do you have in there?

I found that the filter I had in my 6.6 gallon wasn't sufficient to cycle, and I couldn't get over the 3ppm ammonia, 5ish ppm nitrItes, and 5ish ppm nitrAtes. I had to put a more powerful filter in and it finished the job admirably.

I use a tetra whisper pf10. &i just did a change, I got ammonia down to a 4.0. Having trouble telling the nitrite because the purple shades are so alike.... But I'd say it's a 5.0/6.0 because the shade of purple in the tube doesn't match any on the api kits card. Idk though. Haha I'll test nitrite again tomorrow.

Well, you will need to put something in there once the ammonia levels start going down. You need to keep "feeding" the bacteria with ammonia, otherwise it will die. So, yes, once the ammonia is down to 2ish you'll need to add something to continue to add ammonia and feed the bacteria. If I were you, I'd either throw in some food and let it break down now, or go out and get some ACE brand ammonia and use that.

No no no. The ammonia will go to 0 and the nitrItes will go to 0 when there is a sufficiently large bacteria colony to process the ammonia. If YOU let it go to zero before the bacteria brings it to zero, your whole cycle will be lost. If YOU let it get to zero, that means that there is no ammonia to feed the bacteria. It will naturally get to 0 when the bacteria can process the ammonia.

ahh.. I see.. But what will probably confuse me is when I know there is good colonized bacteria. Like when do you know that the ammonia is reaching 0 "the right way" and when it's reaching 0 "the wrong way"? Basically, when do I stop feeding ammonia?
