There's duckweed on the Raritan river near my house. It would probably be a bad idea for me to grab some, huh? I saw it when I was at the park last week and I was like.... oooooh free duckweed! But is it a nuisance?
My duckweed died off.. I think I had too much light on it. Some people say it takes over but you can always take some out and throw it away. The only problem with it is it sticks to everything (like if you put a net in the tank, etc) and its annoying to try to get off.
Its supposedly really good for absorbing wastes because its so fast growing.
I think I'll grab some then. After I find out if the Raritan is okay pollution wise. It was really neat looking. It was growing in a line down the middle of the river for as far as you could see. But there was a bunch pushed up against the boat dock that I could have grabbed.
I think I have duckweed in my tank, when I bought some fish a couple of months back the LFS put some in each of the fish bags, she said it was good for helping with nitrates or something but never told me what it was so I've been googling things for weeks lol. It looks cool when it bunches together but it doesn't seem to be growing, lol
Thanks! I'll do that. Do you think they'd do okay outside in a kritter keeper? As long as I had a lid on it? I have a creek in my back yard and we have a ton of dragonflies. I don't want any hitchhikers.
Should be fine, you may want to use a screen to cover it so it can still get light, but you will be making daily water changes during QT to remove and unwanted stuff anyway so it should not matter that much...
Also, make sure it is legal to collect in your area, at some public places you have to get a permit.
You know, I never thought to check the back end of my creek. It's pretty slow moving at that end and my condo community owns it. I hadn't considered legality and this is a state park I'd be getting it from. I tried to google whether or not I could collect but the internet is NOT the information highway it used to be. Lol! I'll take a walk with Molly when the heat index isn't 110 and check my creek. Thank you Oldfishlady and 1fish!
