Unhappy turned white and attacked self?

i am not new to having bettas but i have never seen one turn white over night and then start ripping at it's own tail... i have replaced his tank water and he seems fine now... does anyone know what could have caused this? how i can prevent it from happening again? He is now back to his dark purple self but missing his tail... does any one know how long befor it will grow back?

thanks

He might have external parasites. Correct me if I'm wrong, though.

there seems to be nothing on his body now... it was just for like a day that this happened.... i have been putting in some medicine for bettas called...betta revive..... he seems to be doing well... chasing the females around... but i am more worried about the part where he started to rip his own tail off... he looks pitifull with a ripped up short tail....

Mine turned white from ammonia poisoning. The attacking could be from stress from bad water.

Yup. Mine too. I've been adding AQ salt and doing 50% water changes daily. I figure if he was stressed enough to turn white, I should be proactive in preventing any further infections.

I FREAKED when I first saw him. I'd been on vacation and the person I left in charge of him didn't see fit to change his water after his plant had rotted in his bowl! I think my freak-out stressed him more than the water conditions.

Asides from some fin damage (his anal fin is curled now) he seems fine now, except that he hides from me everytime I come in the room now.

Were the females in with him when he "attacked himself?"

Ah. Okie. It's great that he's eating. That's always a good sign.
