film at top

I am curious if anyone might know what this stuff is, I get this filmy stuff at the top of the water and it seems to get heavy sometimes. I do 50% water changes about twice a week, but after those changes it comes back. It seems to stay clumped and not break apart like dust might do. I have live plants and no filter, I do use conditioner also.

I'm not concerned since my fish seems fine, just wondering if anyone has a clue as to what it might be, or maybe what it could be coming from.

It is most likely organic protein and harmless..just ugly
It can be cause by lots of different things from the oils on your hands, in the air, smoke, sprays, decaying plant matter, build up in the substrate, fish food etc.....

You can use a paper towel and lay over the top to absorb some of it, add an air stone of filtration of some type to keep it broke up, substrate vacuuming, removal of dead plant material, wash hands, remove uneaten food, cover the tank when you cook if the tank is close to the kitchen etc.......

Yea, I agree, protein.

If you put an air stone in there, it might turn it into foam that will float at the top, then you can skim it off.
In marine tanks we use something called a protein skimmer to remove it, and it does just that... turn it into foam.
