What's happening to my White HM?

Hi all,
I recently got a White HM from Thailand. He's about 3 months old.
He looked great for about a week, and then his fins started looking torn and raggidy. I don't know what's causing this, as he has very clean water and silk plants. Will his fins even out/turn back into a Halfmoon as he matures?
Thanks,
-Josh

What size is the tank, any filtration used or live plants, how much and how often are the water changes and when was the last one, how is his appetite and how much how often are you feeding him, any additives used and water temp?
Have you noticed him tail biting any?

He lives in a 5 Gallon tank with a Cascade 80 Filteration System. I recently dosed the tank with a capfull of Dr. Tim's One and Only as well.

As far as his behavior, he's still very lively and has a large appetite.

I just tested the water again, and it appears that it has a .50 ppm Amonia Reading. Could that be causing this?

Yes, ammonia can cause fin and tail problems, also too strong of filtration can shred the fin and tail, kinda like when a flag is blown in the wind.
I would make water only changes until you get the ammonia level down to at least 0.25ppm and 0ppm even better, baffle the filter will help too
During the cycling process I would increase the water changes to 2-3 50% weekly to keep the ammonia in check

You have a beautiful Betta by the way......

Okay, thanks for the help OFL. I'll increase his 50% water changes and hopefully his tail will come back. I just did one and he already seems to be happier.
