Talking Shells...Discuss!

Many say that a few shells are ok, just dont go overboard. Who uses shells in their tank? I love the way they look, and I have two in a 6 gallon tank, but i will take them out if they harm fish.

I wouldn't use them because I want my bettas to have the soft, slightly acidic water that they would have in their natural environment. If the water is so hard that the shell wouldn't break down, then I don't want that water for my bettas. The only exception is for a Walstad tank because some form of shell or coral is needed to buffer the water for the plants....but in that case I use crushed oyster shells mixed into the soil.

^ Agreed. I had shells in my tank before I knew better and it gave my bettas severe fin rot.

Was my shell bought?

This guy used to come in with these shell's like that and they had a big mucle in them that people eat so we had to make a tool that would reach up in there and pull it out. Then the guy would go sell the shell's, so I had him give me one....

I had my shells in the tank for a long time before I had any trouble. If you have shells in your bettas tanks I suggest taking them out ASAP.
