Pinkie has been staying at the top of her home. She is breathing really hard. The edges of her gills are really red and swollen. I believe of what I read she has Gill Disease or is it just Inflamed gills. I'm not sure which one it is. she also seems more active when I cover her home with a towel.
Yes, I use conditioner.
I have been using aquarium salt for the past few days, because she came from a Pet-store sorority that had aggressive females and gouramis in it.
I would start by making some daily 50-80% water changes to rule out the environment.
Red swollen gills, heavy respiration can be a sign of ammonia, nitrite, and/or chlorine/chloramaine poisoning and it can also be a sign of gill flukes and other parasites that affect the gills.
Usually they will yawn more than normal, lethargic, a bit heavier slime coat in the gill area, red gills, flashing, heavy respiration, gulping at the surface you can't see them with the naked eye, you have to scrape and look under a microscope, not seen a lot in Bettas, but it is possible.
I would rule out the environment first with some water changes and dechlorinator
I'm so sorry!! I'm pretty sure she had inflamed gills. It's due to nitrate
poisoning and in the last stages the betta will be gasping for air, unable to breathe and die :( Regular water changes can help prevent this disease.
