Alternative Lighting

I can't find a hood anywhere that has a built in light for my tank, so i've been thinking of some alternative ways I can have live plants and keep them alive at the same time lol. At the minute the tank has Elmo, sand and a ceramic pot which is boring for him and boring for me to look at, so I was wondering maybe I could use a desklamp with a flourescent bulb, would this work for plants such as fern, vallis, wisteria, etc?

Cheers me dears

I figure that would be okay, but then again I'm no expert with plant keeping. Roy sits on my desk with me under my lamp, as his tank didn't come with a light :)
Hope someone more knowledgeable can help you out here, haha

I think it would work. Just make sure the bulb has a light temperature of 6500k as that's what plants like best (6500k imitates sunlight). You will find them easily at most stores and the packaging will tell you what the light temperature (k) is.

But im still doing research on aquatic plants so correct me if I'm wrong.

Here's an example:
