If you have lots of live plants and guppy grass is great for this, without a filter I would do twice weekly 50% water changes in a 5g tank, the naja or guppy grass should use the ammonia produced as food before it becomes a problem for the fish if it is actively growing. The plants will become the filter and if you let some of it root all the better.

Thanks, OFL!

I threw some more guppy grass in there this morning. Plus he has java fern in there as well as some Bacopa Australis. Oh - AND a moss ball!

I was planning on doing three 50% water changes a week with gravel vac.

Good? Or not so much?

I am of the mind set with water changes...the more the better....lol....especially with HM...they tend to need or fins do best with fresh water...so 3 50% a week would be fine as well in my opinion, since you have live plants rooted you may not want/need to do break downs on the tank. Play it by ear so to speak...watch the Betta and plant growth.....

Okey-dokey!

Just one more question, please. Can guppy grass be rooted? I have just been letting it float and it seems to be doing well. :)

I had sponge filters in each of my 5g...my boys would not blow nests no matter how much I reduced the flow. I removed them about 2 weeks ago and they are nesting non stop. I do two 50% water changes on week and a 50% and 100% the following week. So far this is working great...but I might try just one 100% weekly.
