I now have an empty space in my divided...

Well one of my fish passed away, so half of my 5 gallon divided is empty. I have three options...

#1: Open it up and give the current fish all 5 gallons. This seems like the logical thing since 5 gallons is pretty small to divide. However, Tut seems really happy with his 2.5 gallons, and both my other fish are in 2.5 gallons. It would seem kinda unfair for him to have five... I know that's a weird thought

#2: Move my other male into the empty space, and get a new female for his tank. I don't want a male and female divided, because I feel it would be stressful.

#3: Get a third male for the space.

You pick!

And just so ya know the 5 gallon was never meant for a divided tank. I was gifted a fish I didn't have room for, but the setup seemed to work after all.

I would open it up, but I prefer all mine to be spoiled with 5 gallons. :D There's so much more you can do with 5 gallons. My 2.5's seemed cramped. :(

Well I just got ahold of a ten gallon. I would like to split the 10 for my two males and give Izzy her own 5. Thing is the ten doesn't have a filter, and I don't wanna go through a cycle right now. Is it realistic to have an unfiltered 10 gallon?

Keep in mind that you'll still have to do 100% water changes and rinse out everything in the tank regularly. I suggest you just leave your fish in their current tanks while you do a fishless cycle--fishless cycling takes a lot less effort than fish-in and only requires one water change at the end and a few doses of ammonia. Easy and very little effort, really--especially since you can borrow colonized media from your tanks. :)

I use this filter on my 10 gallon: http://www.fosterandsmithaquatics.co...2&pcatid=16742It's cheap, and it's very customizable--you can set the spray bar to spray up at the water surface for a little agitation and minimal current, or you can have it spray at the glass, or into the divider. Plus, canisters are the quietest filters you can get.

Good luck, whatever you decide.
