Fin rot?

I'm sure you get these all the time, but does this look like fin rot?

Looks more similar to tail biting to me. How quickly did it happen? It would take a while for fin rot to take off that much tail fin, but with tail biting it could happen in just a few hours or days.

I noticed it a few weeks ago. Initially I thought it he got caught up in the filter so I added a small sponge to it to get rid of some of the suction, but it seems like it's getting worse. Are you referring to him biting his own tail? He is the only fish in the tank. Sorry, I'm new to this. Thanks!

Yep, bettas often bite their own beautiful tails off, and nobody knows why. It could be stress, boredom, bad water conditions, a habit they develop, etc. Unfortunately this can be a little hard to prevent. Just keep his water very clean in the meantime while his tail regenerates and make sure no infection develops. Lots of people have tail biting bettas and they are healthy fish most of the time.
