Unhappy Betta? :(

My boy Blade doesn't seem happy. All he does is sit in his hiding spot, and eats when I put food in his 5g tank. When he does swim, its tracing up and down the sides of his tank like he wants out. Heres his details.

He lives in a 5g long tank.

His temp is 80, which is the temp of all my bettas.

He doesn't have anything to be stressed about, as my males dont have any contact (they cant see other bettas).

I feed him Top Fin betta bits. 3 pellets in the AM 3 in PM.

His filter doesn't run very fast. It doesn't bash him around.

His light is on during the day, off at night.

He gets weekly 75% water changes.

His tank is fishless cycled.

He shows no signs of indigestion, ick, tail biting or tail rot.

He lives with 4 ghost shrimp.

Also, like all my bettas, he has a ping pong ball, which the rest of my fish play with.

He seems depressed, any cures?

How long have you had him and how long has he been acting like this?

Have you tried turning off the filter or adding an extra water change?

Your husbandry practice sounds fine.

Since I got him, I've had him about a week. I've had the filter off all day today, and he's still hiding.

Husbandry - as in care?

I would just give him longer to adjust--you should turn the filter back on so that the bacteria don't dry out or starve. He would probably benefit from a filter baffle--since even slight currents can put stress on bettas, it couldn't hurt to dampen the flow a bit. There's a stickied tutorial on how to make one. :)

Does he have a lot of decor in the tank and big leafy plants that go all the way to the top? Often, the more hiding places your fish have the more you see of them because it gives them a sense of security. Try adding more leafy plants and keeping the light off for longer periods of time.

He has a hiding spot, 2 java moss balls and another plant. Plus a floating log. The filter is baffled, I have aquarium foam.

Yes, husbandry is care..

He may still be adjusting to the new environment and bigger space, I would give him more time and make sure he has plenty of hiding places in both the upper and lower part of the aquarium.

Make sure and dump the water in the filter and rinse the filter media in old tank water or declorinated water before you re-start it to prevent an ammonia spike if it has been off for longer than 6 hours due to death of the good bacteria, you may also need to add a 50% water only change in a few days too or monitor the water prams.

All the water stuff is normal - I just checked. Thanks though, maybe he just needs to adjust. (:
