How many times a week do you do water changes? If your not using a filter and also not keeping up with your water changes then this could be the problem. How big is the tank?

Depends, If you just cleaned it recently it could be a bacterial bloom. If this is the case it goes away the next day (it does for me)
OR it could be dirty water...

I really think you should use a filter no matter how big or small the tank it could really benefit your betta. it can only do good

I usually hear people say that a 10 gallon should be filtered and cycled

hm, ok because the pet store said that it is not required because they naturally live in rice paddies.

The bettas in pet stores are so far from being the wild bettas that live in rice paddies!

I would definitely aquire a filter! Unless you clean the 10g 100% at least once a week, you really need a filter.
The great thing about having a filter is that you only have to take out & replace 40-70% of the water a week.
