Tiger Not Feeling Well

Tiger has been sick for 2 1/2 days, progressively worse. Started out just hanging out on the bottom, hiding. Not flashing or itching on things. Clamped fins. Can't really see any velvet or ich. Just a few spots on his pectorals. This morning he couldn't seem to get to the top to get air, so I put him in one of those little floating breeder tanks. He's been at the top all day, but severely clamped fins, color is pale, breathing is not too fast, but not normal either. Flashlighted him, but can't see velvet or spots. I treated for velvet. Whatcha all think?

Thanks. Guess he was better off in the stupid little cup at Petco. Geez, a friend of my son has one in a fish bowl, no air, no heat, just the normal water conditioner. Feeds him when he thinks about it. Has lived for a year with infrequent water changes. When he can't see the fish, he changes the water. His Betta lives in a "roach motel" and I gave mine the Hilton and he dies. Well, now I gotta strip down the tank and start over, maybe a little smarter this time. At least he was happy for about 3 days...

I'm sorry for your loss.

You did use water conditioner when you added the water right?

Thanks. I'm on well water. It is really hard, like 8.2. So I used 2 gal of my water and added 8 gal of RO, which brought it down to 7.6. Then I used Blackwater as well and aquarium salt, plus Amquel. I cycled 2 weeks. Just wasn't enough I guess. Use the paper strips to test water quality. So that was a no-no.. not reliable I quess. Ah, live and learn. I'm starting over completely. Son's friend is on city water and only uses the standard conditioner. Cycling isn't in his vocabulary.

If you only had him for less than a week, he probably had a bacterial infection before you got him and the change he experienced when you introduced him to the tank was so stressful that the infection took over. I think that you should keep your cycle going and try again with a fish from a different store, or wait until they get a new betta shipment. I also think you should scale the feeding way down--at most, three pellets twice a day for very active and large fish. For smaller, less active fish, two pellets twice a day or three pellets once a day.

Ya I would assume he was sick when you got him. Sorry...ask the pet store when they get them in like Adastra said and pick one up the following day.
I only feed my boys 2-3 pellets per day.

Yeah, he had been at the store for awhile, so perhaps he was already infected. I did ask the store when they get new ones in, but they still have the same bunch they had 2 weeks ago. Nothing new in 2 weeks. Not selling real fast I guess. Thanks for the input. I'm going to start over again and make sure I get a "fresh" fish.
