I don't understand putting the food in a container. Wouldn't that prevent the ammonia from getting into the water column to start the cycle?

well you put it in something like a sock or mesh-bag, so water can flow through the food and pick up the ammonia but the food can't go everywhere in the tank.

Hi i'm new too I just got my betta last night from petsmart and freed him from that dirty bowl of water into a 5 gallon tank. i think he's a veil tail but is it normal for his fins to look like they are sticking together at the tips? i was trying to see if he would flare up but he hasn't done so.

It is called clamped fins. Due to the stress of being in the little cup.

My guy had it too when I got him. When he adjusts to his new home - which looks great - he will be fine.

Oh ok thanks he had me worried for a second i thought he was sick. I feel my tank still looks kinda plain though i'm thinking of adding a few more plants and accessories.

VERY cute veil tail! I think a background on the tank would go a long way to jazz it up. :)
