Sorry to contradict you, BS, but a canter is NOT a gallop. A canter has 3 beats and a gallop has four. You can see what I mean here: http://www.equusite.com/articles/bas...icsGaits.shtml and also this supports that article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canter
:)

Anyway, congrats on the canter! Soon you'll be galloping through fields and jumping 5ft fences (not exactly lol)

Ok. I just got it off of dictionary.com. XD

Yep, I jump him. He's a retired jumper, but he still jumps pretty well.

I know lol, I was just kidding about that. I've been riding for 6 1/2 years and I haven't even jumped 3' yet (though I've jumped 2' 9" bareback). OTTB's are really amazing horses!

cool i have been riding for a year and i have only jumped 1 ft i am still working on it. i took a bad fall a while ago over a jump so my biggest problem is confidence.

I remember my first canter. It was on my first lesson horse, Val. She's was a sweetie. Over 10 years later, it's still my favorite thing to do. :)

Confidence is hard to have, especially when you've fallen doing something. Whenever that happens to me, I just take a deep breath, do it again and hold on tight. Works every time. :) The horse knows when you're nervous, so don't think about it, just do it.

That doesn't matter (the 1 ft part). If your problem is confidence, don't rush. Do a lot of ground poles and little teeny (6" or less) jumps. Once you get more confident then move on to bigger stuff. If you have a good instructor, she/he will understand and help you find your confidence. And don't be scared of falling off (though it can be hard), I've lost track of how many times I've fallen and the most serious injury I had was a minor concussion. My instructor broke her collar bone because she didn't fall off
