my male hmpk blew a big nest and i wasnt around the whole time to know if my bettas bred. but he chases the female away whenever she gets close to the nest but she still has the vertical bars...does this mean they did or didnt mate?

How long were they together? You should be able to see the eggs if they are in the nest. The are a whitish-cream color as opposed to the clear bubbles.

If you're not using cups or leaves as nest covers, you should be able to see the eggs/fry.
Physically, the female should have a thinner body than before. And should loose her breeding bars. But sometime they stay that way (with bars). So I'd suggest that you look at the nest and see if there are eggs in them.
