I do not have a filter though, I have a heater and a small air pump for the tank. Gravel mulm would work better in that case?
Actually I am not 100% sure if it is a filter, I aquired it with the tank...It is an Elite Air Pump I'm pretty sure although it has a small sponge inside it, is that a sponge filter?
my 20 gallon has a whisper air pump but no sponge so I am a little confused by it :P

I will continue to read up on the fishless cycle :]

Interesting. There's probably some sponge involved in there somewhere! I guess if you can't cut it, you could scrape it or squeeze it over the new filter. The mulm will do as well. Good luck.

Sorry I guess I didn't clarify that well :P
I do have a filter for the 20 gallon but I don't for the bettas new home (just the air pump with a sponge in it)
So take the sponge in my main filter and squeeze sum of it into the bettas new home or into the air pump sponge?

Hm. Well, to be honest I've never seeded a sponge filter before since all I use are canisters and power filters, lol. I think what I'd probably do in this situation would be to take the sponge off of the sponge filter and put it into the filter compartment on the 20G and just let it marinate for awhile. If you search around the net you might find some better ideas, but that's the only one that comes to mind, really. You could soak it in some mulm water while the sponge filter is on, also, so that it hopefully draws some of the mulm into the sponge.
